Why You Should Consider a Smart Roller Door: A Guide to Custom Roller Doors

Roller doors have been a popular choice for homeowners for many years. They provide easy access to the garage, while also offering protection and security for your vehicles and belongings. However, with advances in technology, roller doors are becoming smarter and more convenient than ever before. In this article, we’ll explore why you should consider a smart roller door, and how custom roller doors can enhance your home.

What is a Smart Roller Door?

A roller door is a type of garage door that opens vertically and rolls up around a drum. A smart roller door is a roller door that is equipped with advanced technology, such as remote operation, sensors, and automatic opening and closing features. These features allow for greater convenience, security, and safety for homeowners.

Do I Need a Smart Roller Door?

There are several reasons why you should consider investing in a smart roller door for your home. One of the main benefits is convenience. With a smart roller door, you can open and close the door remotely using a smartphone app, eliminating the need for physical keys or remotes. This feature is especially useful when you need to let someone in or out of the garage, but you’re not at home.

Another benefit of smart roller doors is security. With the ability to monitor your garage door remotely, you can ensure that your garage is always secure. Some smart roller doors come with built-in sensors that can detect when someone is trying to enter your garage without your permission and send you an alert. This feature can give you peace of mind when you’re away from home.

Smart roller doors also offer safety benefits. For example, some models come with built-in sensors that can detect if there is an obstruction in the door’s path, preventing the door from closing and potentially causing damage or injury. Additionally, some smart roller doors can automatically close after a set period, reducing the risk of leaving your garage door open.

One of our favourite applications is when the garage door is clad in the same material as the building’s exterior wall. As the door starts to close, it disappears before your eyes. Its unique design and flush façade is hard to beat when it comes to curb-side appeal. If you’re going to make a statement, the Flush Mount system is the way to go.

Our custom roller doors are made from high-quality materials, and can be designed to match your home’s style and color scheme. Additionally, custom roller doors can be tailored to your specific needs and preferences, ensuring that your garage door perfectly complements your home’s style and functionality. Trend 2: The Wooden Look

This is a trend we are all here for… however, we understand the maintenance that usually comes with timber which can differ people from choosing this material! Luckily for you, our excellent suppliers at B&D Garage Doors have made achieving this vision super easy. Knotwood is one of our favourite materials for many reasons… its eco-friendly, timeless, safe, durable, and best of all, it looks like the real deal natural wood. Made from aluminium, knotwood is the perfect option for those seeking convenience, being rust-resistant and durable. Joints, screws, rivets, and fixings are also concealed within the design profile, meaning you can achieve a sleek, modern and sophisticated look. Now, who wouldn’t want that? Knotwood also comes in a wide range of powder coating colours; whether you want to achieve that light coastal oak look or a dark modern ashy style, we basically have it all!

Trend 3: Smart Roller Door

Have you ever left the house in a rush to work and thought, “oh no, did I shut the garage door?”… this year it may be time to invest in a smart garage door! Having a smart roller door means that at the touch of your fingertips, you can securely open and close your garage door anytime and anywhere. Using the app, you can access the camera view of your garage and receive real-time notifications on your smartphone when the door has been left open or obstructed, thus creating greater security and less stress for you and your family. The B&D Garage Door app also allows you to authorise specific users to operate the garage door and remove any you don’t! This means that when your teenagers come stumbling home late from a night on the town and lock themselves out, you can easily open the garage door from your bed or not…

This home design style is characterised by its rustic, country-inspired aesthetic. Garage doors that feature the farmhouse vibe are typically made from wood or other materials like our favourite knotwood and are designed to evoke the look and feel of a traditional barn or stable door. This style of door is perfect for homes that are located in rural areas or that have a country-style aesthetic. With a wide range of colours and materials, we can easily help you achieve this look and make it one that will fit your new or existing home!

How To Choose The Right Garage Door For Your Home

What people can see from the street is essentially the public face of your home. Whilst we all have varying opinions on the balance of aesthetics and functionality, most people do place some value on the curb-side appeal of their home.

Your garage door can account for up to 60% of your home’s front exterior, so, it’s an important consideration when making choices about the look and feel of your home. There are many options available to you when choosing the right garage door, so we’ve provided some pointers to help you make the most suitable choice for your needs.

Design Aesthetic

Your overall home aesthetic might be light and airy, natural or farmhouse chic, dark and moody or perhaps mid-century in vibe. A white-fronted home won’t necessarily cry out for a black door, but then again maybe that’s your vision. Whatever your preference, there are many options that you can choose between to put your stamp on your home.

Profile Design

Profile design refers to the design that is on the door itself. The panelled components of your door are something that you can customise with considerations about width, texture and pattern.

Security

This one’s a no-brainer, and whether you have security concerns in your neighbourhood or not, garage doors with auto-lock security are beneficial to your home. As the largest entry point to your home, a garage door plays an important part in the overall security of your home. With an auto-lock option, you can forget about the need to secure your garage each time you leave the building. The system works by sending a heavy-duty bolt through the guard rail each time it closes, without the need for a key.

Sustainability

Sustainability is no longer just a buzzword. It’s a way of life that most people are aware of in some capacity and it’s a great new addition to many industries’ way of thinking. The B&D Designer Door range offers an environmentally friendly option with a Prodema Prodex. This material provides an elegant, natural wood option and has the added benefit of being highly durable and resistant to natural elements. It’s made from raw forest material which is managed in a socially and environmentally responsible way. You also get bonus points in green building certification schemes such as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) and BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Methodology).

Visibility

If you’re building a new home and your architectural vision is based on subtlety and minimalism, you can join forces with a growing number of people choosing to have their garage doors ‘hidden’ within the front facade of their home. It’s an elegant and stylish way to go and there are multiple ways that they can be incorporated.

Flushmount Sectional Door

Whatever your choices, your garage door is designed to last, so it’s a point worth considering carefully for the long-term curb-side appeal and function of your home.

The different types of doors

When considering installing commercial roller doors, there are essentially three main types of doors to consider.

Sectional Doors

Our most popular choice are the B&D P7 industrial sectional doors. Each sectional overhead panel door is constructed with a lightweight but sturdy aluminium frame with over 10 different options for panel inserts depending on your specific aesthetic and needs. Panel inserts range from clear or coloured acrylic, corrugated steel, air panel or aluminium slats. For complete customisation P7 Industrial can be installed with an aluminium finish or with a choice of over 100 powder coat colours. With heights ranging from 1370mm – 4500mm, widths from 1800mm – 7620mm and full automation options, sectional doors are a great option for carparks, kiosks, shopping centres and shopfronts.

Roller Doors

Industrial roller doors are a safe and economical option for your business, with a range of options to suite your varying needs. The G&D Roll-A-Door S1 Mini Warehouse line is most suited to storage centres, kiosks, mini warehouses and shop fronts. Doors range from 1250mm – 3000mm high and 940mm – 31500mm wide, all options are high wind rated, offer smooth and quiet operation and are fitted with precision springing and bottom weatherseal to keep out unwanted debris. B&D commercial roller doors in the Roll-A-Door Series 2 and The Roll-A-Door Series 3 Squareline ranges are ideal choices for larger spaces like warehouses, factories and sheds that require durable, strong and secure doors. We recommend the B&D Flex-A-Door range for client’s looking to replace an existing tilt door, have restricted headroom or have an unusual shaped entrance like archways. All range offer sleek profiles and have multiple customizable features including a vast colour range.

Shutter Doors

The last option for clients seeking commercial doors are shutters. With slotted, perforated and slat styles available, shutters can suit all matter of smaller spaces from arcades, shopfronts, trucks & vans, fire reel covers and bars to large spaces such as sporting complexes, secure parking structures and factories. This style of industrial garage door can be one of the most cost-effective options as individual slats or panels can be replaced in the case of damage. Made from a combination of aluminium and galvanized steel, the doors are built to last and offer high quality security to your business.

Security Considerations for your industrial garage door

In addition to your existing security systems, we recommend installing the B&D Controll-A-Door Secure system.  This is an automatic fast-opening system that will illuminate a large space below with an LED light allowing you enough light to find additional switches or locks. The Controll-A-Door Secure system act as a safe lock anti tamper system that will automatically lock your door should an intruder try to lift it and is covered by market leading 10-year warranty.

Open post Flush Mount System

The Flush Mount System

Over the last 12 months, B&D’s Flush Mount system has become increasingly popular with our clients throughout the Northern Rivers. As a feature of the Designer Door series, the Flush Mount system is unique, innovative and architecturally significant.

What is a Flush Mount system?

The Flush Mount system mounts a garage door to the outside of a building’s exterior in a way so that the door sits flush with the exterior wall. Your regular garage door is set back into the garage space a little, a Flush Mount garage door uses special hinges and fittings, so that it becomes part of the exterior wall it is fixed to. These doors can be clad with the building’s exterior material so that they appear to be part of the wall, or not even there at all. Often, our clients choose the Flush Mount system to achieve this on-trend ‘hidden-garage-door’ look.

The Flush Mount system can only be applied to sectional garage doors. Sectional doors are broken into 4-5 panels that allow the door to bend and follow the curved path when opening and closing. The panels are stored along the ceiling on the garage, and can compromise the height and space of the room. It’s only minor, but it’s something to keep in mind, especially if you have a big car. Unfortunately, the Flush Mount System cannot be applied to a roller door (at this point in time).

Why we love the Flush Mount system

The Flush Mount system is part of B&D’s Designer Door range for a reason. It exudes architectural design, modernism and individuality. Homeowners choose this garage door system for its visual impact and because it seamlessly integrates to the front of a building (commercial or residential), it’s only noticeable when the door actually starts to open.

Curious about the specific benefits of choosing a flush-mount system for your home?

One of our favourite applications is when the garage door is clad in the same material as the building’s exterior wall. As the door starts to close, it disappears before your eyes. It’s unique design and flush façade is hard to beat when it comes to curb-side appeal. If you’re going to make a statement, the Flush Mount system is the way to go.

The aesthetic of the Flush Mount system has wow-factor, however there are functional benefits that worth mentioning. Being a B&D garage door, Flush Mount doors come with all the promises of the brand; quality, reliability, longevity, safety and security. On top of that, the Flush Mount system is effortless and quiet in operation.

Design options

The Flush Mount system is available in many different design and material options. In fact, because it’s a system, there are a very wide range of material, colour and profile designs to choose from.  All garage doors in the B&D Designer Door range can be fitted with the Flush Mount system, including Prodema Prodex, the slatted collection and the sheer panel collection.

Have a look at some of the Flush Mount garage doors we’ve installed in the Northern Rivers. If you think a Flush Mount system is right for your home, get in touch to talk with our friendly staff and expert design consultants.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What is a flush mount garage door?
A flush mount garage door is a garage door that sits completely flush with the exterior wall of your home, rather than being set back into the garage opening. Special hinges and fittings allow the door to become part of the wall itself, creating a seamless, almost invisible look when closed.

  2. How does a garage door sit flush with the exterior wall?
A flush mounted garage door uses a specific hinge and fitting system that allows the door panels to align perfectly with the building’s exterior cladding. The door can even be clad in the same material as the surrounding wall, so it blends in completely and is only noticeable once it starts to open.

  3. What’s the difference between a flush garage door and a regular garage door?
A regular garage door is set back into the garage space, with visible tracks and a recessed appearance. A flush garage door, by contrast, sits level with the exterior wall with no recess, giving it a cleaner, more architectural look.

  4. Can any garage door be converted into a flush mount system?
No the flush mount system can only be applied to sectional garage doors, which open in 4-5 panels along a curved track. It cannot currently be applied to roller doors or roller shutters.

  5. Is a flush mount sectional garage door available in different materials and colours?
Yes. As part of B&D’s Designer Door range, flush mount sectional garage doors are available in a wide range of materials, colours, and profile designs including the Prodema Prodex and slatted collection, so you can match it to your home’s exterior.

  6. Are flush mounted garage doors only for modern homes?
Not necessarily. While flush mount systems are popular for their sleek, modern appearance, they can complement a range of architectural styles, especially when clad in a material that matches the existing facade.

  • Dover White
  • Surfmist

Profile Design

Once you’ve set your sights on a colour, next thing to think about is profile design. You may not realise how much this customisable feature can make a difference to your door. The Panelift model has three umbrella profile designs, and within each are several variations to explore. One of the most popular profile designs is the Modern Straight Line Seville and you can see why it’s favourite in the image below. It creates an illusion of slats and works great with timber coat colour range.

Top 5 trends for Garage Doors in 2021

Whether it’s time for a new garage door, you’re wanting an upgrade or looking to add value with street appeal, there is a very wide range of options to choose from. From roller garage doors to sectional garage doors, to endless colour choices and design profiles, making the right choice can sometimes feel overwhelming. Not to worry, because we have seen a number of garage door trends evolve throughout the year, making your decision a little easier to make.

Auto-lock Security

More and more, customers are choosing Auto-Lock security for their garage door. Nothing says ‘modern’ more than the most up-to-date security technology. As the largest, external-facing door in your home, a garage door plays an important role in protecting your family and valuables. The Auto-Lock system sends a heavy-duty bolt through the guard rail each time it closes without the need for a key, giving you peace of mind. It’s no wonder we’ve seen this accessory increase in popularity.

b&d auto-lock

Panelift is popular

The B&D Panelift garage doors are Australia’s most popular, and for good reason. They are reliable, durable and safe with traditional elegance and an extensive choice of colour and profile designs. We’ve always thought of this garage door as the ‘go-to model’ and our customers prove it; recently, the Panelift garage door model has been more popular than ever.

Sustainable Materials

With the rise of sustainable consumerism, more and more of our customers are interested in garage doors made with sustainable materials. The B&D Designer Door range offers an excellent environmentally friendly material: Prodema Prodex. With all the elegance of natural wood, Prodema Prodex is a unique natural timber product for façade cladding. It’s highly resistant to nature’s elements, making it an ideal option for your garage door.

Prodem Prodex is another eco-friendly wood-alternative. The product is made from raw forest material, managed in a socially and environmentally responsible way. Available for sectional door models, using this material give your home points in green building certification schemes such as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) and BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Methodology).

Natural Finishes

Natural aesthetic has always been a design trend and popular choice for garage doors, and it’s not going away. It’s timeless, complements natural surroundings and offers a sleek and sophisticated look to any home. Along the coast of Northern NSW, the most popular timber coat is in the colour ‘Merbau’, often added onto Seville Panelifts and Neo Roll-A-Doors.

“Hidden” Garage Doors

Subtlety is key these days, and we are seeing a growing number of modern builds integrate garage doors into the façade of buildings. Essentially, these garage doors are “hidden”, complementing modern architectural and design choices for homes. It’s a minimalistic approach and its always an exciting project for us to work on.

When you’re making decisions about your garage door, make sure you’re considering its 20 to 30 year lifespan and how your life might change between now and then. Choose models, colour, profile designs and materials with this in mind.

When you’ve decided on a garage door, get in touch with C&M Garage Doors to get the ball rolling.

So, you’ve registered your warranty and you’ve booked your annual service in, but what else can you do to care for your garage door? When it comes to extending the life of your garage door, there are a few more things we recommend you do. This includes:

  • A basic inspection
  • Cleaning and lubricating springs, hinges and other moving parts
  • Keeping your door clean

Check your garage door

When you remember, every 3 to 6 months, you can be doing the following to preserve the working condition of your garage door:

Perform a visual inspection

Check all the edges, the nooks and crannies, the springs and tracks for anything out of the ordinary. Keep an eye out for rust, insects and any fraying cables.

Protect against Corrosion

Wash down the external surface of your door with clean water and a soft brush or cloth every 14 days, or more often in coastal areas. Washing your door not only keeps your door looking good, but it also removes the build-up on any organic matter. If you notice any corrosion in your guides, you can use white vinegar and a wire brush to scrub it off.

Lubricate garage door hinges and springs

Open and close your garage door, paying attention to how it sounds. Keep an ear out for any squeaking, popping and scraping. Even if you don’t hear anything different, you still need to apply lubricant to the moving parts of the door regularly to prevent any damage. Using a silicon based lubricant, lubricate the springs, bearings and hinges (but not the tracks – that’s the next step!).

Clear the tracks of your garage door

Often dirt, oil, dust and debris end up in the tracks of your garage door, hindering its smooth operation. Grab a dampened cloth with mineral turps or methylated spirits and clean the tracks, paying careful attention to removing any oil or grease.

When do you need our help?

For anything other than the above, you need a garage door technician. Some common problems that require immediate attention include:

  • The door is stuck or gets stuck momentarily when open or closing
  • The motor is making a strange noise
  • The door is not responding to the remote control
  • The door is squeaking loudly
  • The tension needs to be adjusted

With these self-maintenance tips, you can make sure your garage door is in working order, extend its life and protect your warranty.
